Maritime Sector as a Space for Intercultural Interaction: Historical and Sociolinguistic Factors Shaping Professional Communication
1 Danube Institute National University “Odesa Maritime Academy”, Izmail, Ukraine
ABSTRACT: This study provides an interdisciplinary analysis of the maritime industry as a background for intercultural communication and professional communicative competence. The rationale for this study is based on the context of globalization, the increase in multinational crews, and the increasing significance of the human factor in navigation safety. In fact, although standardized language procedures are in place according to regulations such as the STCW Convention and Standard Marine Communication Phrases, communication is a major cause of incidents. The study provides for a historical-comparative, sociolinguistic, and discourse analysis of IMO documents and case studies of communication-related accidents. It provides for a three-level model of maritime communicative competence: historical, linguistic, and social. The findings of the study reveal that communicative competence is affected by factors such as globalization, the lingua franca effect of the English language, hierarchical structures, and cultural differences. It provides a framework for understanding maritime communicative competence and its implications for maritime education and English language training.
