%X The article presents the technical aspects of applying the marine Automatic Identification System (AIS) for the purposes of vessel traffic control in inland shipping. Functional properties and requirements for inland AIS have been discussed as well as protocol alterations in relation to marine AIS, with particular consideration of messages enhancing safety of navigation and the flow capacity of inland waterways.
